Black Panther 3 Casts David Jonsson as T'Challa's Son and Sets a 2028 Release Date

Marvel Studios has officially dated the third Black Panther movie for December 15, 2028, and the announcement answers one of the biggest questions left by Wakanda Forever. David Jonsson will play an older version of Prince T'Challa II, the son of T'Challa and Nakia, and will become the new Black Panther as the character comes of age.

Ryan Coogler, who directed both previous Black Panther films, will return behind the camera. He introduced Jonsson during Marvel's Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, joined on stage by Letitia Wright and Winston Duke. Marvel has not yet announced the full cast, an official title or a production start date.

Jonsson is playing Prince T'Challa II, not a recast version of Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. Marvel has not explained whether the character will age naturally, appear after a time jump or be affected by the wider multiverse story unfolding in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Black Panther 3 could follow Shuri mentoring T'Challa II, resisting a transition that comes too early or protecting him while he decides what his family name means to him.

Winston Duke's appearance at the announcement also keeps M'Baku in the conversation. Wakanda Forever ended with him challenging for the throne, so the sequel has several different sources of authority to reconcile: Shuri as protector, M'Baku as political leader and T'Challa II as the heir to a defining legacy.

Black Panther 3 arrives two years after Avengers: Doomsday, which opens December 18, 2026. Wright and Duke are both connected to the Avengers ensemble, making Doomsday the next place audiences can look for changes in Wakanda's status before the solo sequel.

For now, any direct multiverse link is speculation. What Marvel has confirmed is simpler and more significant: Coogler remains the creative anchor, the younger T'Challa will grow into the story, and the franchise is building forward without erasing the characters who carried Wakanda through its loss.
